Welcoming evening
Av Gral Iriarte 2290  – 21:00hs

Swiss-Russian actress and singer Alexandra Prusa was first to bring Argentinian Tango to Switzerland and Germany in the early 1980ies.Now she presents her new album with great Tango classics – sung in the four Swiss national languages – plus Spanish and English. Alexandra Prusa’s first bernese version of ‘Ballad for a Lunatic’ by the ingenuous duo Astor Piazolla/Horacio Ferrer was frequently played even in the most hiped milongas of Europa. Her actual collaboration with the sublime Argentinian-French ‘Cuarteto La Strapata is yet another surprise to her public – it’s purely neo-classical. Here’s something new arriving on the Tango-scene: a fascinating synthesis of Tango tradition and most actual Swiss multi-culture.

Opustango Quinteto

Monday 13th at  Bar Los Laureles
Welcoming evening
Av Gral Iriarte 2290  – 21:00hs
Opustango Quinteto is a tango music group based in the city of Buenos Aires, made up of young musicians with extensive training and recognized achievement. The quintet mainly performs tangos, waltzes and milongas with its own musical arrangements. However, they also often recreate orchestral versions belonging to the so-called “golden age” of tango. The quintet’s special sonority is due to the solo role of each member. Yet the group still retains the sense of ensemble, and also incorporates the clarinet (unusual for the genre). Their repertoire is varied, including composers from the beginning of the 20th century (such as Agustín Bardi, Eduardo Arolas), up through Carlos Di Sarli, Julián Plaza, Mariano Mores (among others), to creators of the last few decades (Nicolás Ledesma, Raúl Garello, Astor Piazzolla, etc.). Opustango Quinteto performs in various Argentine salóns and is producing its first recording, to be released shortly.
MEMBERS: Clarinet: Uriel Kaufman, Violin: Rodrigo Beraldi, Bandoneón: Nicolás Maceratesi, Double bass: Karen Sano, Piano, musical arrangements and direction: Juan Gabriel Romano

They toured England, Sweden, Denmark, Italy and Germany and have performed at the most prestigious milongas in Buenos Aires, opening up a nonexistent path for the possibility and visibility of same-sex couples both professionally and socially. Today, 13 years later, they dance together again for the opening of the 2017 Queer Tango Festival of Buenos Aires.

The group was established in mid-2009, with the aim of recreating the style of one of the greatest orchestras in the history of tango, that of Juan D’Arienzo. Its singer, Pablo Ramos, son of the last singer of the Rey del Compás (King of Compás), Osvaldo Ramos, carries on this interest with the input of young and talented musicians of the genre. They contribute to the style a freshness and adaptation that has today earned the ensemble great public recognition and esteem as one of the elite orchestras of the milonguero circuit of the city of Buenos Aires.

Sidney B. Grant and Claudio Marcelo Vidal are truly trailblazers as out and proud men in both traditional and LGBTQ tango. Sidney was the first-ever openly gay man (and first North American) to win the USA Argentine Tango Championship in New York City in 2011. Two years later, Claudio was the first male follower in the history of the World Tango Championships in Buenos Aires to wear heels, reported by prominent press, including Argentina’s Clarín and La Nación.Together, in 2016, they were the first-ever male couple in the history of the USA Tango Championships in San Francisco (pictured above), making it all the way to the finals! Their subtle, close embrace style and musicality has captivated audiences and students throughout the Unites States, at special events in Washington DC, Boston, Portland, Hudson, San Francisco and dozens of milongas and workshops in New York City, including the first and second Queer Tango Weekends in NYC, and workshops at the debut DC Out festival.Sidney was one of the judges for Argentine Tango at the last Gay Games in Cleveland, Ohio. In addition to his teaching with Claudio, he has taught in Hong Kong, Paris, London, Berlin, Istanbul, Greece, London, Mexico, and is excited to be teaching at the very first Tango Marathon in Capetown, South Africa in December.Other notable performances include a PBS special on the famous USS United States of America in Philadelphia, and a guest appearance at Strictly Tango in NYC which was reported by the New York TImes in an article on the advent of Queer Tanog, where Claudio and Sidney appeared on the cover of its Weekend Arts section in September, 2015:

Opustango Quinteto
